Respite Live-in Care and Nursing

"For a long time, I thought that respite meant Malcolm having to be shipped off somewhere. I hated him going away (he always came back traumatised by being parted from familiar people and things and sometimes in a poor physical state) whereas respite at home for him has really worked. And I get time to myself and a quiet mind."

"The Health service ombudsman's report insists that respite care funded by the NHS can be provided at home, with someone coming in to replace you."

Consultus Live-in Nursing Service (CLINS) offers a cost effective choice that provides full-time home supervision and hour-to-hour, day-to-day consistency of care to people who need a high level of assistance and for whom a move from familiar surroundings would prove distressing.

As a health or social care professional you will know that people who care for someone with dementia, frailty, physical disabilities or a chronic illness are often elderly themselves, or can become sick and depressed from the physical and mental exhaustion of caring for a needy relative at home, which in turn puts further strain on the NHS and social services.

That is why there is a provision for the NHS and local authorities to make available respite services so that carers can recharge their batteries. Sometimes these resources are not taken advantage of because carers think that residential care will upset their relative or that a visiting support worker would not be enough.

Respite care may also be needed when a carer has to go into hospital leaving a seriously ill, difficult to move person on his or her own.

The 'live-in' option

For hundreds of people around the UK (including some financed by NHS Continuing Care), CLINS offers the most satisfactory and reassuring form of home respite care. We provide an appropriately experienced and fully vetted live-in care assistant or nurse to stay for a few days or even weeks, providing 24/7 care, supervision, cooking and housekeeping services.

If live-in care is the preferred option you should use a specialist agency like CLINS which will have on their roster plentiful numbers of staff who love to do live-in work and provide their clients with essential consistency of care and back-up. CLINS HCAs and nurses are chosen for a combination of factors including their skills, qualifications, experience and initiative.

Consultus has supplied live-in nurses and carers since 1962 and is probably the largest provider in its field.

If you would like to book a nurse or HCA please give us a call during normal office hours on (01732) 771924 or 770403.

"The government [has] announced that they would be allocating £25 million for emergency respite care to local authorities from 1st October 2007… expressly to provide emergency cover for unpaid carers who, for reasons of an emergency or personal crisis are unable for a short period to continue to provide care.

"The intention is that short-term, home-based, cover is established in each council to provide support in crisis situations. The outcome is to provide reassurance and confidence for the carer that should anything happen to them that alternative care can be put into place, wherever possible in the cared for person's home.

"And what is the key message that older people give us when we ask what they want for the future? It is summed up in a single word 'independence'. They want to remain independent for as long as possible, they want to control their own lives, make their own choices and live in their own homes"
Under Secretary of State for Community, November 2003

"The local health board, local authority and local NHS trusts have identified the need for…the development of a clear commissioning strategy for… respite care for people with multiple complex health needs."Welsh LHB Intermediate Care Review
